Functions of the HKAN

The HKAN will perform the following major functions:

  1. set, monitor and enforce the standards of study and practice of specialty nursing in Hong Kong;
  2. accredit advanced-practice programmes and education institutions in reference to the set standards;
  3. certify and re-certify individuals who have graduated from the accredited programmes (and comparable others) for advanced practice;
  4. sponsor and conduct educational activities that enable advanced practice nurses to maintain currency in areas of expertise;
  5. support and foster development of advanced nursing practice e.g. through recognition of excellence, through analyses of future needs; and
  6. educate the public regarding the roles and benefits of specialization in nursing.

The Hong Kong Academy of Nursing will be considered as a separate entity form the Hong Kong Nursing Council and be financially independent. The existing Register of Nurses maintained by the Hong Kong Nursing Council is considered as the registration at entry level, whereas the proposed Specialist Register by the Academy would be considered as an advanced level registration. The HKAN will work closely with the Nursing Council to establish such Specialty Registry.
